What is a Texas Semi-Open Adoption?

The first step of the Texas adoption process may be the most difficult. But that does not mean that there are not going to be harder decisions ahead of you during your adoption journey. One of the most difficult choices is what type of adoption is the best for you. There are three types of adoption to choose from: open, semi-open, and closed. It’s important to research and learn what each adoption type offers before making your final decision.

To help you get started, let’s focus on a semi-open adoption! If you need help with adoption now, you can call us at 945-444-0333, text us at 945-444-0333, or email us here.

A semi-open adoption is growing in popularity as adoption becomes more open. You may be thinking: What is a semi-open adoption and how will it benefit or restrict me? You’ve come to the right place! Adoption Choices of Texas has the information and resources you need to answer your questions!

A New Outlook on Semi-Open Adoption

The basics of semi-open adoption include a certain level of communication and connection that is established between a birth mother and the adoptive parents following an adoption. These communications can be done through means such as email, letters, phone calls, and the exchanging of photos. All of these forms of contact are mediated through an adoption agency. At our adoption agency in Texas, we use a secure, private online portal called ChildConnect to facilitate contact between you and the adoptive parents.

A semi-open adoption is a great option for birth mothers who still want to have a form of contact with their child, but want to keep their privacy. This is why all contact in a semi-open adoption is mediated to help keep confidentiality between birth mothers and adoptive parents.

Choosing Adoptive Parents in a Semi-Open Adoption

An important step in your adoption plan is going to be choosing the adoptive parents for your child. Birth mothers can approach this portion of the adoption process in a variety of ways. Each approach all depends on their preferences, boundaries, and life circumstances. There are three main ways that you can make this decision.

  1. You can choose the adoptive family. Birth mothers often choose to be fully active in the research and final decision-making for their child’s adoptive family. For birth mothers who want to be a part of this process, it can be therapeutic and rewarding to choose the adoptive family who will become so important for their child and their child’s future.
  2. Your adoptive team can pick a candidate and you make the final decision. This is a common option for birth mothers. It allows them to be a part of the final step of choosing who will raise their child but also keeps their boundaries, emotions, and feelings protected.
  3. Your adoptive team will choose the adoptive family. For many birth mothers, making the decision to pick the adoptive parents for their child is not one they are able to do. It can be too painful and traumatic. This is normal and okay! If you feel this way, let your adoption caseworker know and our adoption agency will take care of placing your child in the best adoptive family for him or her.

Discuss Semi-Open Adoption with Your Adoption Team

You are in Control of Your Semi-Open Adoption

Whatever you decide, you need to know that you are in control of your entire adoption plan. You have total control over what adoption type you want and what level of communication you want with your child.

You may be fearful about making “the wrong decision.” But, remember, that there is no right or wrong decision when it comes to an adoption plan!
