Top Reasons Birth Mothers Decline an Adoptive Parent Match

By Kelly Paczkowski

Birth parents can choose to place a baby for adoption for many reasons, whether it be personal, financial, or just not feeling ready to parent a child right now. Choosing adoption for your baby is a big decision in and of itself. Add the pressures of choosing an adoptive family on top of that, and the situation can seem overwhelming.  You might be wondering what are some reasons birth mothers decline an adoptive parent match.

When a birth mother decides on an adoption plan, they may not realize that it is not the only decision they have to make. It is the first step in the process, but it is also the beginning of choices. They have to choose an adoption agency in Texas, from there what type of adoption, and then, of course, an adoptive family. While it may seem scary, with an adoption specialist by your side, you will not be alone through the process.

As a birth mother, you will be given profiles of adoptive families by your adoption specialist. These families have all been pre-screened, home-studied, and approved by your agency to be potential adoptive family. That means that you have control over choosing the adoptive family your baby is placed with.

With that being said, of all the profiles you are able to choose from, not all of them are going to be exact matches to your idea of an adoptive family for your baby. You may decide on a family and then decide they are not the right fit. And that’s okay. There can be different reasons that a birth mother might decline an adoptive parent.

Changing your mind about the adoption

You have the right to change your mind, whether it be regarding the adoptive family. You may think you have decided on the family and then decide it’s not the right choice.

Your religious beliefs do not align with the adoptive parent’s beliefs

You may decide that you want your baby to be raised in a certain religion.

The size of the adoptive family

Your choice in declining a parental match might be the family size. You can choose adoptive parents that may or may not have children already. Maybe you want your baby to be the first child in the family, or you might want them to have an older sibling or siblings. Either way, the choice is yours.

The type of adoption

you might already have a preference on the type of adoption you want with your adoptive family. The three main types are Open, Semi-Open, or Closed. You may be comfortable with one, and the family might not be as comfortable as you are. That could affect your decision of a prospective adoptive family.

Another reason for declining an adoptive family might be you just do not feel they would be the right choice. This decision is probably the biggest one to make, after choosing adoption in Houston. This family will be the one your baby will be raised by. They will be the ones celebrating your child for everything they do well, be there to kiss the boo-boos, and love your child unconditionally. If you have doubts about your choice, it is best to talk to your adoption specialist. They will be able to discuss why you may feel that this family is not the right one.

People may think that adoption is the “easy” way out. A way to not have the responsibilities of raising a child. It is far from easy, and most birth parents find the decision of choosing adoption a difficult choice. Not to mention choosing an adoptive family. Any of the families you are shown will love your child. Some may be better matches than others. You should not feel guilty about choosing one or declining another. You are the one that gets to decide what family you feel is the best for your baby.
