Texas Closed Adoption: Is this the Right Choice for Me?

By Blessing E. Ikhimokpa

You’ve decided you’re going to give your child up for adoption. Being in the child’s life isn’t something you’d like. So, contact your local adoption agency to see your options. They tell you that there are three types of adoptions to choose from one of them being a Texas closed adoption. After they explain each one, you decide to pick closed adoption. At Adoption Choices of Texas, we’ve helped countless birth mothers in your situation. Know that you’re not alone in this process. We’ll be there to help every step of the way.

What are the three different adoptions in Texas?

In Texas, like other states. There are three main types of adoptions to choose from when putting a baby up for adoption. There’s an open, semi-open, and closed adoption. If you’re interested in having a steady relationship with the birth child. Then open adoption is the one for you. In this choice, the birth parent (s) and the adoptive parent (s) will work together. Work together to help raise the birth child. You’ll be able to:

  • Call them whenever the adoptive parent (s) are available
  • Be able to visit
  • Send cards and pictures
  • Message through email or your phone

Sharing contact is a big thing with adoption. However, not everyone wants that, which is where semi-open adoption comes. In a semi-open adoption, the adoption agency will be that voice. The one that handles the communication with the adoptive parent (s).

In a closed adoption, there is no communication with the adoptive parent (s). Closed adoption is where you have let the adoption agency handle the adoption. You’ve already gone through the pregnancy. Now it’s time for the adoption agency to deal with the adoption itself.

Am I able to change my mind about closed adoption in Texas?

With changing your mind about adoption. In Texas, you have 48-72 hours until you have to sign the adoption papers. During this time, either you or the adoptive parent (s). Will spend time with the birth child. The adoptive parent (s) can use this time to get used to the child. While you can use the time to decide whether you’ll be going through with the adoption.

You can only change your mind if the adoption papers haven’t been signed once the adoption has been closed. You can’t decide to choose a different type of adoption since this is a closed adoption.

If you have an unplanned pregnancy and are in need of help. On what you can and can’t do with a closed adoption. We have adoption agents that will be there to answer any of your questions.

Can I choose an adoptive family with closed adoption in Texas?

With a closed adoption, you won’t keep in contact with the adoptive parent (s). You’ll still be able to choose who they are. Things you can look for when choosing an adoptive family are:

  • Location
  • Religion
  • Sexuality
  • Finances

Things that you think are important regarding who will take care of the birth child. This is not a requirement. You can still have the adoption agency handle this step for you.

If you need unplanned pregnancy options about how you’re able to choose an adoptive family. There are adoption agents and counselors that can walk you step by step. Adoption can be stressful. Let us handle that stress for you instead.

What are some reasons birth mothers choose closed adoption?

Some birth mothers didn’t plan on being birth mothers at all. This was an unplanned pregnancy they weren’t prepared for. They kept the birth child. But decided they would not be a part of the child’s life. Some reasons birth mothers choose closed adoption are:

  • They’re too young to become a birth mother
  • They weren’t ready for parenthood
  • It was an unplanned pregnancy
  • They don’t want to be in the child’s life

Those are some reasons birth mothers choose a closed adoption. Becoming a parent is a job not every birth mother is ready for. With unplanned pregnancies, there are classes to take. But those classes become too much for some birth mothers, which is why they choose to separate themselves entirely.
