  1. Seek Support – Creating a support system can provide a sense of understanding and community for birth mothers. There are many forms of support birth mothers can find such as supportive family members, supportive friends, and support groups. These types of support groups, whether in-person or online, can provide birth mothers with similar experiences, understanding, empathy, care, and advice. 
  2. Counseling – Adoption can be an overwhelming process in dealing with lots of emotions. Counseling can aid in understanding the emotions behind the process and working through grief. In addition, counseling can help birth mothers develop coping methods and support. 
  3. Self-Compassion – It’s important to acknowledge your emotions and what’s going on at the moment. Give yourself grace and allow yourself to let the emotions out naturally without passing judgment on yourself. 
  4. Self-Reflection – Setting time aside to reflect on the emotions you’ve been through surrounding the adoption can help sort through thoughts and experiences. Journaling, for example, can be a form of self-reflection for some people. It provides a therapeutic method of processing your experience through writing down your feelings and thoughts. 
  5. Physical Health – Taking care of your mental health is important, but so is physical health. Remember to consider your physical health by getting enough sleep, regular physical exercise, nutrition, and staying hydrated. All of these things will play a role in your emotional well-being. 
  6. Mindfulness – Birth mothers can implement a daily routine of mindfulness practices such as meditation, yoga, and relaxation methods. Having a mindfulness routine can help alleviate stress and create emotional balance. 
  7. Celebrate Milestones – During the adoption process, don’t forget to celebrate and acknowledge the healing process. No matter how small the milestone, recognize how much progress you’ve made. 
  8. Celebrate Your Strength – As a birth mother, you’ve made a difficult decision, and it wasn’t out of selfishness. Rather, you’ve chosen that option out of love for your child and want the best for them.
  9. Participate in Activities You Enjoy – Spend some time on the activities that you find joyful and meaningful. Engaging in activities you enjoy can improve your mood, reduce stress, and improve your well-being. Some examples of activities you can try are hiking, joining a club, meeting up with friends, spending time with family, and drawing.. 
  10. Limit Social Media Usage – Social media can be triggering for some or worsen their well-being. Taking a break from all social media platforms can help birth mothers avoid comparison and negative self-talk.
  11. Volunteer – Being involved in a community to aid others can provide a sense of fulfillment, purpose, and joy in making an impact on someone else’s life. Some places you can volunteer include community centers, schools, non-profit organizations, hospitals, and charity events. 
  12. Seek Professional Help if Needed – If you’re noticing a change in your behavior, or struggling to process overwhelming emotions, depression, or anxiety, there’s no shame in reaching out to a mental health professional for guidance and support. 

The emotions involved in the adoption are going to take time to process and understand. However, you’ve continued to be resilient and grow. Remember, you are not alone in the process. Incorporating these suggestions about self-care into your routine can help nurture your own emotional and physical well-being.
