Self-Care Tips for Birth Mothers Navigating Adoption During the Month of May

By Molly Allington

During May, especially around Mother’s Day, you may not know how to cope if you have an unplanned pregnancy. Today, we will give you some great self-care tips that you can use throughout May, throughout your unplanned pregnancy, and throughout your Texas adoption. Self-care is one of the most important parts of an adoption process, so it’s very important to learn the different ways you can add self-care to your life. Here at Adoption Choices of Texas, we are here to support you. Self-care can start with reaching out to us and getting help from an adoptive caseworker. We have many different ways we can support you through your adoption journey when you decide to place your child for adoption. Here are some self-care tips for birth mothers throughout their adoption journey.

Surround Yourself With Family and Friends

One of the most important things you can do for yourself during your adoption in Texas is surrounded yourself with your friends and family who love you unconditionally. Adoption can be a hard process to go through alone, so it’s important that you create a support system for yourself.

No matter how far away you are from your close friends and family, it’s important to stay in touch, especially during this hard month. With Zoom, Facetime, and social media, you have many ways to stay in touch with the ones you love. You can even find support groups on Facebook if you feel more comfortable surrounding yourself with other birth mothers going through a similar situation.

Have Some Alone Time

On the other hand, having some alone time can be extremely relaxing, allowing you to decompress. You can spend your alone time however you like. Have a spa day by yourself, either at your own home or at a spa facility. Treat yourself to your favorite dinner or dessert. Watch your favorite show on Netflix while you’re comfy in bed. It’s okay to have those days where you do nothing but relax.

Adoption and pregnancy can be overwhelming for you, so it’s important to take breaks and spend some much-needed time yourself. But, remember, we are here for you at Adoption Choices of Texas, so you are never alone, even when spending a day by yourself.

During Your Adoption Journey, Start a Journal

Another great self-care activity is starting a journal. Writing your thoughts and feelings down daily can help get out your emotions so you don’t hold them in. Bottling up your negative thoughts and emotions can be harmful. The adoption process can be hard for many birth mothers, and journaling can be a great way to get away from everything and write down your thoughts. You are free to write whatever you would like in your journal. You can write in your journal daily, every other day, weekly, or whenever you want to. Even after this pregnancy and adoption process, you can even make this a part of your routine for the rest of your life. It’s all up to you!

When you are journaling, don’t think about what you are writing. Let the emotions and feelings flow out of you, whatever they may be. Write about how your unplanned pregnancy and adoption process is making you feel. This will allow you to see how your emotions change or stay the same throughout your pregnancy and adoption. Talk about the different decisions you are making for your adoption plan. You may want to look back on this time of your life someday and see how you felt. No matter what, journaling can be great self-care for any birth mother.

Try to Stay Positive Throughout the Adoption Process

You may be thinking, “How can I stay positive when I put my baby up for adoption?” We know that it can be extremely hard to stay positive during this unexpected pregnancy, but it can be beneficial to stay positive during this adoption process. There are so many positives to choosing adoption, but we know that you may be feeling many negative emotions throughout this entire journey, and that’s okay! But, you must remember how strong you are for choosing adoption and getting through this process. We are here to help you through your adoption journey and help you stay positive through it all.
