What is National Adoption Month?

Before we discuss why the month of November can be a rich and impactful month for you as a birth mother, Adoption Choices of Texas wants to give you a brief history of how National Adoption Month came about. Back in 1976, Mike Dukakis, Massachusetts’ governor at the time, proclaimed the first ever Adoption Week. This quickly grew and was expanded to a National Adoption Week in 1984 by President Ronald Reagan.

President Bill Clinton, in 1995, decided to finally commemorate the entire month of November to adoption awareness, thus naming it coined National Adoption Month.

Why is November’s Theme so Important?

From November 1st to November 30th, communities, businesses and organizations will have available resources to help spread awareness about adoption. This can be especially helpful to you as you research whether or not placing your baby for adoption is the best option for you and your baby. You will be able to learn about the adoption process, what types of adoption you could choose from, and what kinds of adoptive families are waiting to welcome your child into their home. Knowing all of these details and more can give you clear insight and help you make a well-informed decision.

If you have heard about the adoption world before, you’ve no doubt run into many of the negative stereotypes circulating around what our society and culture thinks of adoption as a whole and you as a birth mother. Researching adoption during November and attending an adoption-related event can show you just how wonderful adoption is, and how it can positively impact you, your child, and your child’s adoptive family.
