Why Choose Adoption as a Second-, Third-, etc.- Time Mom?

Especially if you are already booked and overwhelmed with the children you’re currently raising, you might want to consider adoption. Even if you’re simply not at a place in your personal life to start raising a baby again, that’s okay. For example, maybe you’ve just started refocusing on your career. No matter what the reason, considering adoption when you already have kids doesn’t make you a bad mother.

Will My Kids Be Taken?

No, your children will not be taken from you. We understand that you may be nervous about the consequences of placing a new baby for adoption. Our adoption agencies want to reassure you that placing a baby for adoption won’t place your kids at risk. Do not worry about the futures of your other children. This decision will not put them in danger of losing you.

Explaining the Adoption Process to Children

It may be intimidating to sit down and explain adoption to your children. They may be confused about the pregnancy and the adoption process. However, sitting down to talk it through with them will help. You can get books, show videos, or even talk about what will happen to the new baby.

Make sure your children understand adoption and why this baby will live with a different family. It’s important that your kids understand this is a decision from love and it’ll be best for the baby. There is a possibility that without this understanding, they’ll fear being sent away. Also, if they misunderstand your intentions and reasoning, it could make them think you might give them away too.

This means it’s important to ensure they don’t feel threatened by the adoption process. Through information and conversations with you, they shouldn’t feel scared once they understand adoption is best for the new baby.

You may also want to consider an open adoption if it would benefit your children. For example, they may feel attached to the baby and want to see them with the adoptive family. Of course, it’s understandable if you’re uncomfortable with open adoption. However, for your children’s sake, you may consider it if you think it will help.

Dealing with Outside Judgment

Some people in your life may be uncomfortable with your decision to place a baby for adoption. They may think you have no reason to since you already have children. Remember that you need to do what you think is best for you and the baby. Although they may love you and want the best for you, only you can truly know what that is. They may disagree with your decision, but if you know it’s right for you, don’t let their judgment deter you. Hopefully, throughout the process, they will come to understand your reasoning and accept your choices.
