1. What is private vs. public adoption?

You’ve probably heard the terms private and public adoption. So, what’s the difference? Private adoptions give you control over the adoption process. Private adoption is when you voluntarily place your child for adoption through an adoption agency. Public adoption is when you no longer have custody of your child and no say over where they go.

With Adoption Choices of Texas, you are choosing a private adoption. As soon as you contact us, we will walk you through putting your child up for adoption. If you’re facing an unplanned pregnancy, this can be a time you feel like you’ve lost control. We give you back that control. You will meet with your personal adoption specialist to talk about what you want for your child. Together you create an adoption plan. This outlines every choice you make about the adoption.

2. Does private adoption mean confidential?

The short answer is it’s up to you. Private adoption means you get to choose whether or not you’d like the adoption to be confidential. You can share as little or as much information as you want. Depending on what you want, you then choose an adoptive family who wants the same.

You can choose to get to know your child and have them know you. You and the adoptive family can keep both your confidentiality and go your separate ways when the adoption is finalized. Or you can choose something in the middle. Your adoption options are based on the level of communication you want with your child and adoptive family. You can choose from an open, semi-open, or closed adoption.

3. What is open adoption?

Open adoption has full communication between a birth mother and the adoptive family. The child is also allowed contact with his or her birth parents. The level of communication between the child and the birth parents is determined by an agreement between the birth and adoptive family.

If you want to play a role in your child’s life without the responsibility of parenthood, this is for you. Open adoption allows your child to get to know you and your history. Knowing their family medical history helps to keep them healthy in the future. Through open adoption, you get to know your child and watch them grow up.

4. What is semi-open adoption?

Semi-open adoption has indirect and confidential communication between a birth mother and the adoptive family. This communication is done through an adoption agency. Adoption Choices of Texas uses a secure line called ChildConnect.

A semi-open adoption has less pressure than an open adoption but more flexibility than a closed adoption. You get regular updates about your child without having to maintain a close relationship with them. You also have a level of confidentiality that you’re comfortable with.

5. What is a closed adoption?

A closed adoption has zero communication between a birth mother and the adoptive family before, during, or after the adoption. This is completely confidential because no identifying information is shared.

Although closed adoptions are less common these days, they are still a good option for some birth mothers. Adoptive families still have information about medical history, so it isn’t a risk to the child. If you aren’t in a place mentally or physically to be in your child’s life, this might be for you.
